Monponsett Pond Update
The Town understands that it is very frustrating to see the algae/cyanobacteria counts going up each week in the West Monponsett Pond and it is more than frustrating to have the Pond continuously closed.

There are many people and groups working on this. The Town was reassured by some recent feedback from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). They tell us that the aluminum sulfate treatments applied to the Pond continue to reduce the amount of available phosphorous in the water, so much so that the algae species that relies on nitrogen, rather than phosphorous, is a growing percentage of the algae population. DEP has recommended that the future doses of aluminum sulfate have a higher concentration of this chemical as compared to previous doses.

The Town is working with Natural Heritage/Endangered Species, DEP, SOLitude Lake Management (the firm that has studied the Pond and applied the treatments), and others work out a schedule for future high concentration treatments.

When more information is available, it will be posted on the Town's web site and sent out the Monponsett Pond mailing list.
